The History of Tab

Every church has a story.

Ours is one of faithful presence, bold decisions, and a deep commitment to loving our neighbors. For over 170 years, Tabernacle Presbyterian Church has served the city of Indianapolis from the heart of its neighborhoods—shaped by Scripture, led by the Spirit, and grounded in the belief that God’s love belongs to all people. Our history is more than dates and buildings. It’s a testimony to what God can do through a community willing to stay, serve, and trust His leading.

A Church Rooted in Place and Purpose

Tabernacle Presbyterian Church began in 1851 with 22 charter members committed to the “advancement of Christianity” in the heart of Indianapolis. Originally named Third Presbyterian Church, it was renamed Tabernacle in 1883, as part of a growing movement to create churches that welcomed people who had never been part of one before. The name stuck, and so did the spirit of hospitality and mission behind it.

In 1921, Tab moved to 34th and Central, sensing a call to meet the spiritual and educational needs of the growing Mapleton-Fall Creek neighborhood. Just two years later, the Tab Recreation program was born, a visionary ministry using sports and community engagement to reach kids and families. That same passion to serve continues today, with more than 100,000 alumni of Tab Rec and a legacy of impact throughout the city.

Through years of change—social, cultural, and spiritual—Tab has remained steadfast. In 1965, while many congregations relocated to the suburbs, Tab made a countercultural decision to stay rooted in the heart of the city. That decision has shaped everything that followed.

Since then, the church has continued to respond to community needs by helping launch ministries like the Raphael Health Center, the Neighborhood Christian Legal Clinic, the Open Door Ministry, and The Oaks Academy. These efforts reflect our commitment to a “two-legged gospel,” where proclaiming the Good News is always paired with pursuing justice, healing, and hope.

In 2016, we entered a season of Vision Renewal, recommitting ourselves to three guiding values: Greater Faith, Deeper Relationships, and A Stronger Community. This vision continues to guide how we worship, grow, and serve together today.

We believe our location is no accident. It’s a calling. And we believe the word “Tabernacle” still says it best: A dwelling place of God among His people.
